Drinks At Home
Whether you’re no, low or pro ABV, there are tips to help you raise the bar on your at-home bartender game. Clyde’s Fine Diner’s very own Lead Bartender, Charley Johnson, shared five ways to help inspire your inner mixologist-regardless of alcohol content.

Keep It Classic
When you’re ready to try your hand at making an cocktail with alcohol, start with the classics. These time tested drinks teach you basic bartending techniques and they have ingredients that are easy to find. If you are a gin person, start with a Negroni, Last Word, or a Martini. More of a whiskey person? Try making a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or a Whiskey Sour.

Pull Out the Kitchen Apron
Some of the best bartenders are also talented home cooks. Learning how to make a simple syrup then infusing it with a fresh herb can change the flavor profile of a cocktail. While learning basic knife skills can elevate your drink presentation with a simple fruit garnish.

Learn Something Along the Way
Beer, wine and spirit production carry fascinating histories that can inspire and educate. Love white rum? Dive in and learn about rum production and the rich histories of rum producing countries like Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Indonesia. Looking for no or low ABV options? There are great options for thoughtful, delicious and beautiful drinks far too sophisticated to be labeled “mocktails”.

Keep It Seasonal & Local
The downtown Des Moines farmers market is set to open May 1st. Find inspiration and ingredients among the selection of local products and produce. Think beyond fresh fruits and veggies as possible garnishes. Herbs and edible flowers dress up any drink, and jams, jellies, honeys aren’t just for toast. They easily combine with cocktails to create interest and added local flavor.
